Marvin Johnson was a highly talented saxophonist who had almost 20 years of experience in the bands on the West Coast, before he made the first records under his own name. He began his musical career in 1927 as a member of Leon Rene's Southern Syncopators, joined Les Hite in 1930 and stayed for 9 years. He was briefly with Count Basie's Orchestra in 1942 playing alongside Earle Warren and Don Byas, and then formed his own combo with his drummer brother Roy in the mid-forties, recording for Coronet, Sepia and G&G from 1945-1946 and for Capitol in 1949.
