Pianist, arranger and composer, Horace Silver undoubtedly falls into the category of Jazz Greats. Perhaps even one of the most prolific of the jazz greats when you look at his CV! Horace Silver has played a key role as sideman for nearly all the great names in jazz as well as spending an unprecedented 28 years as a leader of his own band on the Blue Note label. A list of great players he has accompanied would have to include Stan Getz (who gave Horace his first big break when he joined Getz in 1950), Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Lou Donaldson (who helped develop his understanding of be-bop), Sonny Stitt, Art Farmer, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Donald Byrd, Clifford Jordan and Milt Jackson. And that’s without mentioning The Jazz Messengers with whom Horace played alongside co-founder Art Blakey and with men such as Hank Mobley and Louis Hayes. Here we feature Horace in his classic Quintet format where he can be heard with the likes of Hank Mobley, Art Farmer, Kenny Dorham, Doug Watkins, Donald Byrd, Clifford Jordan and on the “Finger Poppin’” album a rather fine and largely unknown tenor saxophonist named Junior Cook............
