We found a few copies of this out of print gem...get it while you can!!
This incredible 25 track cd compiles the recordings of predominantly Bay Area women R&B singers from the 1960's with a few surprises thrown in for excitement. Once again the stamp of Johnny Heartsman is loud & clear on many of the recordings with his T-Bone ish guitar and moaning guitar effects on some really wonderful blues. Also featured are many of the hard to find and previously unreissued sides by Big Mama Thornton...a woman who almost singlehandedly defined ''independent women blues.'' Highlights include the swinging Ella Thomas with Heartsman's band in a classic, early 60's West Coast shuffle that burns hot!!! Also making an impression is the title track by ''Jessie Mae'' ...a real hard core rocker from Los Angeles. Non California singers include the incredible Olive Brown ''Roll Like A Big Wheel'' and the stunning New Orleans recording by Blanche Thomas. This is female blues with a bad attitude...check it out!!
